Sustainability

The Datamail Group is committed to a successful and sustainable future for our people, our business and our environment. We have a growing number of programmes and initiatives across the Group which reflect our commitment.

A formal recycling and waste minimisation programme (GoGreen) was launched at our Petone site in July 2007 to further develop and promote recycling and the diversion of waste from our landfills. The first waste audit as part of this programme was conducted on June 29th 2007 in conjunction with Govt3. A second waste audit was conducted on March 19 2008 resulting in a fantastic 62% reduction in waste to landfill.

Since the implementation at the Petone site the GoGreen programme has gone from strength to strength and has been rolled out in the same fashion to all sites in the Datamail Group sites in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Across all sites we now divert 89% of our waste from the landfill to either be reused recycled or composted. The Primary reason for this success is a dedicated team of 30 sustainability champions (GreenKeepers). This dedication was recently awarded at the 2009 Govt3 awards where the Datamail Group was awarded "Best Green Team."

The drive of the GreenKeepers has inspired other employees to act e.g., the sales manager of our direct marketing arm researched and sourced approved biodegradable and degradable plastic wrap for mail outs. This wrap had been used in NZ for food products but Kinetic121 was the first company to use the wrap for mail outs.

Other initiatives that are already in place across the Group include:

  • Energy saving lighting systems are in place in office sites nationwide
  • Datamail as part of the wider New Zealand Post Group has takes part in the annual St James Ethics Corporate Responsibility Index
  • We sponsor Eastern Hutt School's paper recycling and team up with students for waste audits and beach clean ups
  • Our sites have been involved in the annual “Clean Up New Zealand” campaign
  • We joined up with conservation volunteers planting Native trees for world environment week
  • We promote products such as biodegradable plastic wrap
  • We have introduced composting at our Petone site
  • Our Information Technology roadmap includes the rollout of energy efficient desktop monitors

Being Sustainable means thinking about tomorrow. As a Group we believe that we’re heading in the right direction and we’re confident that our ongoing commitment to sustainability will ensure we continue to make significant inroads and progress.
